What does it take for a car airbag to go off?

My real question is that I want to go to a junk yard and take a sledge hammer and pound it on the steering wheel or penger side dashboard of the car and set the airbag off. I want to know if the airbag can be set off that way. (BTW)they take all the batteries out of the cars.
