Interior rock emitting smell?

i have this portion in my house where an exposed rock is. The rock is a huge one and i decided to incoporate it in my design, the problem is, everytime it rains, annoying smell, comes out of it. Im afraid it can cause health problems also, considering i have kids. Can anyone suggest how to treat this, without removing the aesthetic functionality. Im thinkikng of using concrete sealants and epoxy clear paints. Will this help? thanks
