Solubility of borax (Na2B4O7*10H2O) in water and hydrochloric acid?

I've read multiple places that solid borax should be very soluble in water but when tested in the lab neither my lab partner nor I could ever get it to fully dissolve. Why is that? And would it be more soluble in HCl?
